Tamil and Chinese are the only two languages spoken in Sumatra that does not belong to this group. Over 52 languages are spoken on the island with all but two belonging to the Nuclear Malayo-Polynesian language group. Sumatra island has great ethnic and linguistic diversity. Hence, Medan is a busy trading city and is well-connected to the Kualanamu International Airport and the Port of Belawan. Medan is located at a strategic location along the Strait of Malacca which is one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes. The city serves as the capital of North Sumatra. It is home to a population of 2,109,339 people. Medan is the largest city on the island of Sumatra. It is, however, not very densely populated with just about 90 people living per square km on the island.
Sumatra is also the world’s fifth most populous island. It is the largest Indonesian island located entirely within the country and the world’s sixth biggest island by area. Sumatra is an Indonesian island with an area of 473,481 square km and a population of around 50,180,000 individuals.
